What is Escape the City?

Escape the City is a mobile outdoor escape game. Many know the principle from the escape room: solve puzzles as a team, combine clues, crack codes and work together against the clock. Only here it does not happen in a closed room, but outdoors – the entire city centre becomes the playing field.

Teams are guided by a game app on a tablet that leads them step by step through the mission. There is no fixed room, no setup and no prior knowledge needed: each team gets its tablet, and off you go. Fresh-air movement meets brainwork – exactly the mix that bonds a team.

How Escape the City works

The escape room experience in the fresh air – as a mobile game that your team runs through the city on its own.

1 · The story

A toxic cloud spreads over Hanover. Your team slips into the role of scientists who escaped the disaster lab – now you must produce the antidote and save the city.

2 · The game

In small teams you follow clues through the old town via the tablet, evaluate hints and crack puzzles. Movement and brainwork alternate – every solved task brings you closer to the antidote.

3 · The support

Experienced team guides set up the game and are reachable by chat and phone throughout the event. You have nothing to worry about except solving.

4 · The finale

Together against the clock: whoever completes the mission in time saves the city. At the end the winning team is crowned – a moment you'll still talk about over the closing get-together.

Takes place in any weather – rain ponchos or sunscreen are included.

„In Hanover your team does not follow the Red Thread – but the clues lying next to it.“

Why Hanover is the perfect playing field

Escape the City needs no museum and no entry tickets – it needs a city that invites exploration. Hanover delivers exactly that: an old town of half-timbering and cobblestones between the Market Church and the river Leine, with the city's big stages – New Town Hall, Lake Maschsee, the Herrenhausen Gardens – all within walking distance.

Compact & fully walkable

From the Market Church via the Ballhof, Kramerstrasse and Holzmarkt down to the river Leine, everything sits close together. Ideal for connecting stations without long distances – teams stay on the move, on foot throughout.

A city with a red thread

Since 1971 a 4.2 km red line on the pavement has led past 36 sights. We deliberately play beside it and in between – even people who know the city well find corners they usually walk past.

Many scenes, one mission

Squares, passages, stairways and quiet corners turn into puzzle locations. A simple stroll becomes a thrilling race against time.

Hanover: the backdrop that makes your game special

Hanover is our home town – we have been organising team events across Germany from here since 2001. We know this playing field well: the rebuilt old town between the Market Church and the river Leine, where half-timbered houses from all over the city were moved after the war, and a compact centre of short distances around it.

The landmarks are the Market Church with its striking brick tower, the New Town Hall by the Maschpark with its famously tilted dome lift, and the Ballhof square where half the old town sits outside in summer. Add the Holzmarkt with the Leibniz House, the Nanas along the Leine and the ruin of the Aegidien Church as a memorial. Each of these places can become a puzzle station – teams cross paths along the way and meet up again at the end.

And Hanover has a trump card few cities offer: the Red Thread, a red line painted on the pavement that has led past 36 sights since 1971. For a puzzle game that is an open invitation – the line is there, the tasks are somewhere else. A detail that can be woven into the story on request.

Getting there & good to know

Few cities are easier to reach: Hanover Central Station is a major ICE hub in the middle of Germany, and it is less than a ten-minute walk from the platform to the old town. The A2 and A7 motorways cross just outside the city, and the airport is 20 minutes away by suburban train. An Escape the City pairs well with a finish at the Ballhof square, a walk around Lake Maschsee or a visit to the Herrenhausen Gardens – just ask us about a supporting programme.

Insider tips for your Escape the City in Hanover

A few hints from experience – we are based here, so this is not guidebook research:

🗓️ Best time

From May to September the old town shows its finest side – ideal for the outdoor game. But it runs all year and in any weather; in Advent the Christmas market around the Market Church gives the mission a mood of its own. Watch out for the Schuetzenfest funfair and trade fair weeks: the city is full and hotels get expensive.

👟 Comfortable shoes

Cobblestones in the old town, plus stairs down to the Leine and up to the Hohes Ufer. With flat, comfortable footwear your team has more headspace for puzzles and less for sore feet.

🌹 Heritage bonus

To finish, a visit to the cathedral with its Thousand-Year Rose or a look inside St Michael's Church is worth it – two World Heritage sites in one afternoon. A lovely add-on right after the game.

📅 Request early

Popular dates (May–September and the Advent season) book up fast. Requesting early secures your preferred date and enough lead time for individual adjustments.

„On the Ballhof square it's not the individual that counts – but how quickly the team comes together.“

Off the shelf – or your own theme

Escape the City works straight away as a ready-made format. Those who want it more individual can help shape it – because sometimes a team event should sound like your team, not like a template.

Adapt the theme

Instead of the classic toxic-cloud story, the framework can be adjusted and varied – just ask us about the possibilities. The city stays the playing field, the narrative becomes yours.

Customise individual puzzles

On request we weave company-specific terms, insider references, numbers or a link to your business into selected puzzles. Small touches with a big "aha" effect for the team.

To be honest: not everything is possible, and a fully custom game needs some lead time – but in consultation a surprising amount can be done. Just tell us what you have in mind.
