What is Escape the City?

Escape the City is a mobile outdoor escape game. Many know the principle from the escape room: solve puzzles as a team, combine clues, crack codes and work together against the clock. Only here it does not happen in a closed room, but outdoors – the entire city centre becomes the playing field.

Teams are guided by a game app on a tablet that leads them step by step through the mission. There is no fixed room, no setup and no prior knowledge needed: each team gets its tablet, and off you go. Fresh-air movement meets brainwork – exactly the mix that bonds a team.

Why Quedlinburg is the perfect playing field

Escape the City needs no museum and no entry tickets – it needs a city that invites exploration. Quedlinburg delivers exactly that: a densely grown old-town area on short routes, where a new scene waits around every corner.

Compact & fully walkable

The market square, the maze of half-timbered lanes and the climb up to the castle hill sit close together. Ideal for connecting puzzle stations without long distances – teams stay on foot throughout.

A backdrop spanning eight centuries

Around 2,000 half-timbered houses from eight centuries make the old town one of Germany's largest heritage-protected areas. This backdrop pulls teams straight into the story.

Many scenes, one mission

Squares, passages, stairways and quiet corners turn into puzzle locations. A simple stroll becomes a thrilling race against time.

Quedlinburg: the backdrop that makes your game special

With around 2,000 half-timbered houses from eight centuries, Quedlinburg is one of the most half-timbered towns in the world – since 1994 the old town, castle hill and collegiate church have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque stand side by side in the tightest of spaces; an open-air museum your team does not just stroll through during Escape the City, but becomes part of the plot in.

The short distances between the market square, the winding half-timbered lanes and the climb to the castle hill are ideal for a mobile escape game. On the market square stands the town hall with its Roland statue, over 500 years old, and close by the Ständerbau – built around 1310, one of the oldest preserved half-timbered houses in Germany. Settings where puzzles become especially atmospheric.

Above the town rises the castle hill with the Romanesque Collegiate Church of St. Servatius – burial place of Henry I, the first German king, and home to one of Germany's most precious cathedral treasures. And if you like, you can arrive in style: Quedlinburg is the terminus of the Harz narrow-gauge railway, whose steam trains run into the Harz mountains – a detail that rounds off the team day perfectly.

Getting there & good to know

Quedlinburg is easy to reach via the A36 motorway (towards Braunschweig in the west, A14/Magdeburg–Halle in the east) and by train; the station is close to the old town and is also the terminus of the Harz narrow-gauge railway. Parking is available around the centre. An Escape the City pairs perfectly with a stroll through the World Heritage town or a steam-train ride – just ask us about a supporting programme.

Insider tips for your Escape the City in Quedlinburg

A few hints from experience so your team day in Quedlinburg runs smoothly:

🗓️ Best time

From May to September the old town shows its finest side – ideal for the outdoor game. But it runs all year and in any weather; in Advent, Quedlinburg is famous for its "Advent in den Höfen" courtyard markets, giving the mission a special mood.

👟 Comfortable shoes

Cobblestones, lanes and the odd stairway are part of the Quedlinburg charm. With flat, comfortable footwear your team has more headspace for puzzles and less for sore feet.

🚂 Harz bonus

To finish, the climb up to the castle hill with views over the rooftops is worth it – or a ride on the Harz narrow-gauge railway, which steams from Quedlinburg into the mountains. A lovely add-on after the game.

📅 Request early

Popular dates (May–September and the Advent season) book up fast. Requesting early secures your preferred date and enough lead time for individual adjustments.

How Escape the City works

The escape room experience in the fresh air – as a mobile game that your team runs through the city on its own.

1 · The story

A toxic cloud spreads over Quedlinburg. Your team slips into the role of scientists who escaped the disaster lab – now you must produce the antidote and save the city.

2 · The game

In small teams you follow clues through the old town via the tablet, evaluate hints and crack puzzles. Movement and brainwork alternate – every solved task brings you closer to the antidote.

3 · The support

Experienced team guides set up the game and are reachable by chat and phone throughout the event. You have nothing to worry about except solving.

4 · The finale

Together against the clock: whoever completes the mission in time saves the city. At the end the winning team is crowned – a moment you'll still talk about over the closing get-together.

Takes place in any weather – rain ponchos or sunscreen are included.

„When time runs short, it's not the individual that counts – but how quickly the team comes together."

Off the shelf – or your own theme

Escape the City works straight away as a ready-made format. Those who want it more individual can help shape it – because sometimes a team event should sound like your team, not like a template.

Adapt the theme

Instead of the classic toxic-cloud story, the framework can be adjusted and varied – just ask us about the possibilities. The city stays the playing field, the narrative becomes yours.

Customise individual puzzles

On request we weave company-specific terms, insider references, numbers or a link to your business into selected puzzles. Small touches with a big "aha" effect for the team.

To be honest: not everything is possible, and a fully custom game needs some lead time – but in consultation a surprising amount can be done. Just tell us what you have in mind.
