What is Escape the City?

Escape the City is a mobile outdoor escape game. Many know the principle from the escape room: solve puzzles as a team, combine clues, crack codes and work together against the clock. Only here it does not happen in a closed room, but outdoors – the entire city centre becomes the playing field.

Teams are guided by a game app on a tablet that leads them step by step through the mission. There is no fixed room, no setup and no prior knowledge needed: each team gets its tablet, and off you go. Fresh-air movement meets brainwork – exactly the mix that bonds a team.

Why Marburg is the perfect playing field

Escape the City needs no museum and no entry tickets – it needs a city that invites exploration. Marburg delivers exactly that: a fairy-tale upper town of half-timbered houses that climbs the castle hill via stairs and narrow lanes – short routes, big impact.

Winding & fully on foot

The market square, town hall, the lanes of the upper town and the stairs up to the castle are stacked tightly above one another. Ideal for connecting stations without long distances – teams stay on the move, on foot throughout.

A fairy-tale backdrop

The Brothers Grimm studied in Marburg – today the "Grimm-Dich-Pfad" winds through the city with fairy-tale figures. Half-timbering from several centuries and the view up to the castle pull teams straight into the story.

Many scenes, one mission

Squares, passages, stairways and quiet corners turn into puzzle locations. A simple stroll becomes a thrilling race against time.

Marburg: the backdrop that makes your game special

Marburg is a university town straight out of a picture book: in 1527 Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous founded the world's first Protestant university here. Students still shape the city today – and above it all towers the landgraves' castle from the 11th century. The upper town with its half-timbered lanes, stairs and small squares is an extraordinary playing field: tight, winding and full of corners with a new scene behind each one.

The landmark is the Elisabethkirche (1235–1283), the oldest purely Gothic church in Germany, built over the grave of Saint Elisabeth. From the market square with the historic town hall, steep lanes and stairs lead upward – every corner can become a puzzle station, and the view over the rooftops is the reward. Teams cross paths along the way and meet up again at the end.

And Marburg has a trump card: the Brothers Grimm studied here. On the "Grimm-Dich-Pfad" you meet fairy-tale figures such as Little Red Riding Hood and the Frog King at 16 stations – a detail that can even be woven into the story on request.

Getting there & good to know

Marburg is easy to reach via the A485 and the B3 and by train – around an hour from Frankfurt. The steep upper town is comfortably reached by the glass upper-town lift. An Escape the City pairs perfectly with a castle visit or a meal in the upper town – just ask us about a supporting programme.

Insider tips for your Escape the City in Marburg

A few hints from experience so your team day in Marburg runs smoothly:

🗓️ Best time

From May to September the upper town shows its finest side – ideal for the outdoor game. But it runs all year and in any weather; in Advent the Marburg Christmas market around the market square and the Elisabethkirche gives the mission a special mood.

👟 Comfortable shoes

In Marburg's upper town it goes uphill over cobblestones, narrow lanes and plenty of stairs. With flat, comfortable footwear your team has more headspace for puzzles and less for aching calves.

🧚 Fairy-tale bonus

To finish, a stretch of the "Grimm-Dich-Pfad" is worth it, recalling the Brothers Grimm with 16 fairy-tale stations. A lovely add-on right after the game.

📅 Request early

Popular dates (May–September and the Advent season) book up fast. Requesting early secures your preferred date and enough lead time for individual adjustments.

How Escape the City works

The escape room experience in the fresh air – as a mobile game that your team runs through the city on its own.

1 · The story

A toxic cloud spreads over Marburg. Your team slips into the role of scientists who escaped the disaster lab – now you must produce the antidote and save the city.

2 · The game

In small teams you follow clues through the old town via the tablet, evaluate hints and crack puzzles. Movement and brainwork alternate – every solved task brings you closer to the antidote.

3 · The support

Experienced team guides set up the game and are reachable by chat and phone throughout the event. You have nothing to worry about except solving.

4 · The finale

Together against the clock: whoever completes the mission in time saves the city. At the end the winning team is crowned – a moment you'll still talk about over the closing get-together.

Takes place in any weather – rain ponchos or sunscreen are included.

„Marburg's stairs aren't mastered alone – but step by step as a team.“

Off the shelf – or your own theme

Escape the City works straight away as a ready-made format. Those who want it more individual can help shape it – because sometimes a team event should sound like your team, not like a template.

Adapt the theme

Instead of the classic toxic-cloud story, the framework can be adjusted and varied – just ask us about the possibilities. The city stays the playing field, the narrative becomes yours.

Customise individual puzzles

On request we weave company-specific terms, insider references, numbers or a link to your business into selected puzzles. Small touches with a big "aha" effect for the team.

To be honest: not everything is possible, and a fully custom game needs some lead time – but in consultation a surprising amount can be done. Just tell us what you have in mind.

Perfect for which occasions?

Escape the City suits groups of 10 to 200 people – from a small team day to a large company event. Especially popular for company outings, team building, kick-offs, conference side programmes and club outings in Marburg.
