What is Escape the City?

Escape the City is a mobile outdoor escape game. Many know the principle from the escape room: solve puzzles as a team, combine clues, crack codes and work together against the clock. Only here it does not happen in a closed room, but outdoors – the entire city centre becomes the playing field.

Teams are guided by a game app on a tablet that leads them step by step through the mission. There is no fixed room, no setup and no prior knowledge needed: each team gets its tablet, and off you go. Fresh-air movement meets brainwork – exactly the mix that bonds a team.

Why Erfurt is the perfect playing field

Escape the City needs no museum and no entry tickets – it needs a city that invites exploration. Erfurt delivers exactly that: a medieval old-town core of almost three square kilometres – densely grown, full of bridges, squares and churches, and fully walkable.

Compact & fully walkable

From the Krämerbrücke via Fischmarkt and Wenigemarkt up to the wide Domplatz, everything sits close together. Ideal for connecting stations without long distances – teams stay on the move, on foot throughout.

A bridge full of houses

The Krämerbrücke is Europe's longest continuously built-up and inhabited bridge – around 125 metres, lined on both sides with half-timbered houses. A scene no other city offers, pulling teams straight into the story.

Many scenes, one mission

Squares, passages, stairways and quiet corners turn into puzzle locations. A simple stroll becomes a thrilling race against time.

Erfurt: the backdrop that makes your game special

Erfurt has one of the largest and best-preserved medieval old-town cores in Germany – almost three square kilometres of densely grown lanes, squares and churches. That makes the Thuringian state capital an ideal playing field: a new scene waits around every corner, and the distances in between are short.

The landmark is the Krämerbrücke – at around 125 metres Europe's longest continuously built-up and inhabited bridge, lined on both sides with half-timbered houses. Add the ensemble of St Mary's Cathedral and St Severus' Church above the wide Domplatz, the Fischmarkt with the town hall and the baroque Petersberg Citadel. Each of these places can become a puzzle station – teams cross paths along the way and meet up again at the end.

And Erfurt has a trump card: since 2023 the "Jewish-Medieval Heritage" – the Old Synagogue (one of the oldest preserved in Europe), the Mikveh and the Stone House – has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Martin Luther also became a monk at the Augustinian Monastery here in 1505 – history at every turn, ready to be woven into the story on request.

Getting there & good to know

Erfurt is a central ICE hub and easy to reach via the A4 and A71 – within a few hours from across Germany, with the main station close to the old town. An Escape the City pairs perfectly with a climb up to the Petersberg Citadel or a meal at the Wenigemarkt – just ask us about a supporting programme.

Insider tips for your Escape the City in Erfurt

A few hints from experience so your team day in Erfurt runs smoothly:

🗓️ Best time

From May to September the old town shows its finest side – ideal for the outdoor game. But it runs all year and in any weather; in Advent the Erfurt Christmas market on Domplatz is considered one of Germany's most beautiful and gives the mission a special mood.

👟 Comfortable shoes

Cobblestones, lanes and the odd stairway are part of the Erfurt charm. With flat, comfortable footwear your team has more headspace for puzzles and less for sore feet.

🕍 Heritage bonus

To finish, a look at the Jewish-medieval heritage around the Old Synagogue is worth it – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023. A lovely add-on right after the game.

📅 Request early

Popular dates (May–September and the Advent season) book up fast. Requesting early secures your preferred date and enough lead time for individual adjustments.

How Escape the City works

The escape room experience in the fresh air – as a mobile game that your team runs through the city on its own.

1 · The story

A toxic cloud spreads over Erfurt. Your team slips into the role of scientists who escaped the disaster lab – now you must produce the antidote and save the city.

2 · The game

In small teams you follow clues through the old town via the tablet, evaluate hints and crack puzzles. Movement and brainwork alternate – every solved task brings you closer to the antidote.

3 · The support

Experienced team guides set up the game and are reachable by chat and phone throughout the event. You have nothing to worry about except solving.

4 · The finale

Together against the clock: whoever completes the mission in time saves the city. At the end the winning team is crowned – a moment you'll still talk about over the closing get-together.

Takes place in any weather – rain ponchos or sunscreen are included.

„On the Krämerbrücke, walking past turns into searching – and colleagues turn into a team.“

Off the shelf – or your own theme

Escape the City works straight away as a ready-made format. Those who want it more individual can help shape it – because sometimes a team event should sound like your team, not like a template.

Adapt the theme

Instead of the classic toxic-cloud story, the framework can be adjusted and varied – just ask us about the possibilities. The city stays the playing field, the narrative becomes yours.

Customise individual puzzles

On request we weave company-specific terms, insider references, numbers or a link to your business into selected puzzles. Small touches with a big "aha" effect for the team.

To be honest: not everything is possible, and a fully custom game needs some lead time – but in consultation a surprising amount can be done. Just tell us what you have in mind.

Perfect for which occasions?

Escape the City suits groups of 10 to 200 people – from a small team day to a large company event. Especially popular for company outings, team building, kick-offs, conference side programmes and club outings in Erfurt.
