The Christmas market as a backdrop

Mannheim's Christmas market stands on Friedrichsplatz in front of the Wasserturm, one of Germany's best-known Art Nouveau ensembles. In the middle of it: an eighteen-metre walk-through Christmas pyramid and a historic carousel more than 130 years old.

That is exactly what makes Mannheim a good place for a Christmas party that amounts to more than a buffet and a speech: the atmosphere is there anyway, you only have to use it. We bring the programme – outdoors on Friedrichsplatz or indoors in the warm, whichever suits your group.

Mannheim is the economic centre of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and quickly reached from every direction via the ICE hub. The Quadrate centre is also perhaps the most rally-friendly city centre in Germany: once you have understood the address system you can find any stop — and if you have not, you already have your first task.

Outdoors

The Christmas Rallye leads your teams through the city centre with tablets, with stops on Friedrichsplatz. New this season: battlespots, where two teams meet and compete head to head. Rettet Weihnachten is the outdoor escape variant.

Indoors in the warm

Beat the Red Box is an escape game at the table – it needs nothing but a room and works for up to 500 people. The Christmas Quiz Show with a host is the version where everyone can stay seated.

Hands-on

With gingerbread house building you compete in small teams – and the houses go home with you. With Christmas Domino, thousands of tiles become one shared picture that falls in a chain reaction at the end.

Planning on the ground

On the location: Friedrichsplatz is easy to survey and bounded on all sides — a good meeting point before or after the event, because nobody can get lost. The Quadrate city centre lies right beside it and supplies the route for a rally.

On the room: Around the Quadrate and in the Jungbusch there are restaurants and event spaces set up for groups. The indoor formats need a space with tables — a canteen or conference room is entirely sufficient.

On the running order: The programme belongs at the beginning, not the end. After dinner and the second mulled wine you will not get anyone moving – beforehand everyone is open to it, and the meal afterwards tastes better once it has been earned.

On the date: The weeks from late November through December are the busiest of the year, and Fridays go first. Plan early and you have the run of the calendar – more on that in our article planning your Christmas party early.

On getting there: ICE hub Mannhein the Hbf, ca. 40 min ab Frankfurt, 30 min ab Heidelberg

Frequently asked questions about a Christmas party in Mannheim

Why does Mannheim city centre suit a rally particularly well?

Because of the Quadrate. Instead of street names, the centre uses a grid of letters and numbers — an address reads P7, for example. That makes locations unambiguous and tasks more interesting, because the system itself is already a small puzzle for anyone not from Mannheim.

What does a Christmas party with a programme in Mannheim cost?

The Christmas formats start at €35.95 per person. The Christmas Rallye is €39.95 pp, Beat the Red Box €44.95 pp. Those are pure event prices – you plan the venue and catering separately. The larger the group, the lower the price per head.

How many people can take part?

The Christmas Rallye, Beat the Red Box and the Christmas Quiz Show are designed for up to 500 people. Rettet Weihnachten runs with up to 200 participants, gingerbread house building with up to 100.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The outdoor formats go ahead in almost any weather – what matters is warm clothing and sturdy shoes. If you want complete certainty, choose an indoor format: Beat the Red Box, the Christmas Quiz Show or gingerbread house building.

When should we book?

As early as possible. Dates in late November and December are in high demand, and Fridays go first. Enquire in summer or early autumn and you have a free choice of both dates and formats.

Can the event be run in English?

Yes. Around a quarter of our events run in English – tablets, task texts and the on-site team all switch over. Mixed groups work too: teams can play in different languages within the same event.

Where exactly does the event take place in Mannheim?

The outdoor formats start from an agreed meeting point in the city centre, usually near Friedrichsplatz. For the indoor formats you need a room – your own canteen, a meeting room or a rented space is entirely sufficient.
