The Christmas market as a backdrop

Weimar has a Christmas history reaching back further than the market itself: in 1815, in Goethe's time, the bookseller Hoffmann had the town's first public Christmas tree put up here. Today the square holds a tree and a Christmas pyramid, an ice rink is added on Theaterplatz, and glassblowers and candle makers work at the stalls.

That is exactly what makes Weimar a good place for a Christmas party that amounts to more than a buffet and a speech: the atmosphere is there anyway, you only have to use it. We bring the programme – outdoors on Marktplatz or indoors in the warm, whichever suits your group.

Weimar is a World Heritage site and easy to reach for teams from Thuringia and Saxony. If you want a Christmas party that does not look like a city centre, you get a great deal of substance in a very small area here — and considerably less crowding than in Erfurt or Dresden.

Outdoors

The Christmas Rallye leads your teams through the city centre with tablets, with stops on Marktplatz. New this season: battlespots, where two teams meet and compete head to head. Rettet Weihnachten is the outdoor escape variant.

Indoors in the warm

Beat the Red Box is an escape game at the table – it needs nothing but a room and works for up to 500 people. The Christmas Quiz Show with a host is the version where everyone can stay seated.

Hands-on

With gingerbread house building you compete in small teams – and the houses go home with you. With Christmas Domino, thousands of tiles become one shared picture that falls in a chain reaction at the end.

Planning on the ground

On the location: Weimar's old town is small and dense — Marktplatz, Theaterplatz and the Goethe sites all lie a few minutes apart. Ideal for smaller groups; with very large teams the market gets tight quickly.

On the room: The old town has long-established inns that take groups, plus meeting space around the centre. The indoor formats need a space with tables.

On the running order: The programme belongs at the beginning, not the end. After dinner and the second mulled wine you will not get anyone moving – beforehand everyone is open to it, and the meal afterwards tastes better once it has been earned.

On the date: The weeks from late November through December are the busiest of the year, and Fridays go first. Plan early and you have the run of the calendar – more on that in our article planning your Christmas party early.

On getting there: IC/ICE connection via Erfurt, approx. 15 min. from Erfurt Central Station

Frequently asked questions about a Christmas party in Weimar

What does Weimar have to do with the Christmas tree?

The town's first publicly erected Christmas tree dates back to 1815 — the bookseller Hoffmann had it put up on the market square, during Goethe's lifetime. The tree still stands there every year, and for a rally the story makes a task that exists only in Weimar.

What does a Christmas party with a programme in Weimar cost?

The Christmas formats start at €35.95 per person. The Christmas Rallye is €39.95 pp, Beat the Red Box €44.95 pp. Those are pure event prices – you plan the venue and catering separately. The larger the group, the lower the price per head.

How many people can take part?

The Christmas Rallye, Beat the Red Box and the Christmas Quiz Show are designed for up to 500 people. Rettet Weihnachten runs with up to 200 participants, gingerbread house building with up to 100.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The outdoor formats go ahead in almost any weather – what matters is warm clothing and sturdy shoes. If you want complete certainty, choose an indoor format: Beat the Red Box, the Christmas Quiz Show or gingerbread house building.

When should we book?

As early as possible. Dates in late November and December are in high demand, and Fridays go first. Enquire in summer or early autumn and you have a free choice of both dates and formats.

Can the event be run in English?

Yes. Around a quarter of our events run in English – tablets, task texts and the on-site team all switch over. Mixed groups work too: teams can play in different languages within the same event.

Where exactly does the event take place in Weimar?

The outdoor formats start from an agreed meeting point in the city centre, usually near Marktplatz. For the indoor formats you need a room – your own canteen, a meeting room or a rented space is entirely sufficient.
